Sean’s movie thoughts

Solo a Star Wars story lost money at the box office. I find that hard to believe. Star Wars is thought to be one of the most popular franchises in the world. There are four possible reasons why I think this happened. Reason one, it came out too soon after the Last Jedi and also at a bad time of year. Maybe it would have benefited from coming out later in the year. That would have given the studio more time to advertise the film (there was a not of advertisement for the movie because of the Last Jedi). Also average movie goers in the US go to 5 movies a year and early 2019 had hits like Avengers Infinity War, Black Panther, and Deadpool. Reason two is some people were burned out on Star Wars after the Last Jedi. A vocal part of the audience was not happy with the Last Jedi. How many people that really was is hard to know. (This audience dissatisfaction did not seem to hurt home video sales of the Last Jedi.) Reason three is maybe people loved Harrison Ford as Han Solo and really w...

Solo a Star Wars story is a not a terrible movie. It is not the worst movie I have seen in theaters in the last few years but I might not want to see it again. For a Star Wars movie that is a bit of a surprise. I thought the performances were good. Donald Glover was good as the young Lando. I like Woody Harrelson and I think Emilia Clarke was better than she was in the last Terminator film. Alden Ehrenreich was fine as Han Solo, I think he got better as the movie progressed. I liked Chewbecca too. I don’t think the movie was compelling. There were a couple of plot points that were supposed to come off as more surprising than they did. I thought some of the dialogue was clunky and maybe the heist aspect would have seemed more unique if Rogue One hadn’t happened.  Maybe some stories are better left untold. Perhaps it is time for Star Wars to look to the future. Maybe the next stand alone film, if there is one, should be set after Episode IX and have no characters we already now...
