Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves is pretty good

This is good. It is inspired by the classic role playing game. It has humor but not too much. Chris Pine stars as a former Harper (secret agent) turned thief who leads a small band of thieves. He wants to get his daughter back from a friend who betrayed him. Michelle Rodriguez co-stars and I thought she had a good chemistry with Pine. Maybe it is a bit long. Perhaps five or six minutes could have been trimmed off. I do tend to think a lot of films since 2000 are too long. There is nothing about Dungeons and Dragons you need to know before seeing this film. There are some references that might mean something to people who have read some Forgotten Realms novels. There is also a reference to the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from way back when. This is definitely worth re-watching. Bonus features might fun to explore.

Wonder Woman 1984 is possibly average

I think this movie might be average. There are some nice elements but movie is a bit long. This movie could have been maybe 10 to 15 minutes shorter. Maybe using two villains might have not worked. It is nice to see Chris Pine again as Steve Trevor. He and Gal Gadot have a nice chemistry. It was a nice to see their roles reversed to a degree, with him as a man out of time and Diana explaining the world to him. Gal Gadot remains very good as Diana/Wonder Woman.  I also thought Kristen Wiig was surprisingly good as Barbara Minerva. She should do some more noncomedic roles. I thought Pedro Pascal was fine as Maxwell Lord and he did not seem that similar to Donald Trump to me. I know that was something some critics mentioned.   This one was good at times but a little too long and sometimes it seemed like maybe the movie would have played better with only one villain.  Maybe limiting the film to one villain would have improved a  of storyline. An online critic ...

Re-watching Spider-man into the Spiderverse

This is a very good animated Spider-man film. It features a variety of Spider-men from various dimensions but it is mostly the story of Miles Morales becoming Spider-man. It was nice to have Chris Pine as Spider-man (even briefly). This is everything you’d want a Spider-man film to be. It it is funny, it is touching, and it is exciting. It does a good job of introducing the various Spider-men. These include Spider-ham, Spider-Gwen (who is now called Ghost Spider), and Spider-Man Noir. It is definitely worth seeing if you haven’t seen it and it is worth re-watching if you have seen it.

Reports are that the current Star Trek film series is dead

The Star Trek film series is reported to be dead. That is a shame, I liked the cast and I thought Star Trek Beyond was really good. More members of the crew seemed more involved(or to put it another way the film managed to use more of the crew than the previous film). I really had hopes for a fourth film. Oh well, the reboot was good. The new cast did a good job bringing new life to the classic crew.  Star Trek Into Darkness might be a bit of a misfire but it is not terrible. It is not the worst film in the Star Trek film franchise despite what some people were saying for a while. (That might be Star Trek V or it could be Star Trek Nemesis. I am not sure which one, I think it has been at least four years since I saw either one.) I guess this frees up Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, Simon Peg, John Cho, and Karl Urban for other projects. Maybe some of these actors will work together in other projects. That would be nice. I’d trade both Pacific Rim movies and...

Finest Hours

This is good. It is based on or inspired by a real story. It is 1952 and a boat is sinking during a massive storm. Things are starting to get really tense and a couple of crew members are arguing over what to do. Another crew member (Casey Affleck) steps up. A small coast guard boat comes out to rescue them. Chris Pine plays Bernie who failed in a previous rescue effort. He is advised by some people not to go (pretend he couldn’t get the boat past a certain point because of the storm). He is joined by three members of the coast guard. Ben Foster co-stars as another Coast Guard member. The movie cuts back and forth between the two ships until the Coast Guard ship reaches the tanker. This is effective. The movie is over two hours long but does not feel overly long. There are also scenes featuring Miriam, Bernie’s fiancé, and her dealing with the situation. Some critics didn’t like those scenes but I guess they were added to prevent the movie from lacking a major female role. Also t...

Movie thoughts 9-01-2018

It was nice to see the first Harry Potter movie on the big screen. Cinemas are showing the Harry Potter movies for a limited time in honor of the 20th anniversary of the first book. I might go to another one of the films. I saw the House on Haunted Hill remake from 1999. It is okay and Geoffrey Rush did a nice impersonation of Vincent Price. The original is better but the remake has a few charms. I wouldn’t watch them as a double feature though. Lana Condor should have gotten more to do as Julibee in X-Men Apocalypse.  It is clear after seeing her in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I like the remake of the Blob more than the original. I think the remake is just better in a few ways and I like Kevin Dillion (when he is not in Entourage). (This is not the time or place to rip Entourage but I would be willing to rip it at the right time or the right place.) I don’t want a Star Trek movie without Chris Pine. I might get one if rumors are to be believed. I don’t blame Pine f...

Thoughts about the new Star Trek films

I like the New Star Trek films. I was not sure of the reboot idea when I first heard it but it worked out. Chris Pine has been very good as Kirk and Zachary  Quinto has been very good as Spock. Karl Urban has been good as Bones. None of the three are doing impressions of the previous actors who made the roles famous but each are a good fit for their characters. Zoe Saldana has been really good as Uhura. (She was let down by the writing of the second film.) John Cho has been good as Sulu and the late Anton Yelchin was good as Chekov but they did not have a lot to do in the second film. I like Simon Pegg as Scotty but maybe not as much as I like some other members of the cast. Of the three films, I think Star Trek Into Darkness is the weakest. It is not terrible but some members of the cast did not feel as involved as they were in the first film and there were a few other script problems. In hindsight it is a bit too much like the Wrath of Kahn. (Also maybe I am missing something...
