Thinking about Anton Yelchin

It has been almost three years since Anton Yelchin died. We cannot know what paths his career would have taken if he had not died in a freak car accident. He apparently wanted to direct a movie. As good as he was in Star Trek (and he was good), he had other roles. I liked the Fright Night remake and he was really good in it. I think he was good in Terminator Salvation, even if the film it was not that good. He was good in Odd Thomas, which was based on a Dean Koontz novel. I am not sure if his last movie was Thoroughbreds.  He had a supporting role in that movie. It is worth re-watching just for his performance. (I plan to re-watch it this year.) I think it is his best film outside of Star Trek but I probably should re-watch a few of his other films to be sure. There is going to be a documentary, Love Antosha, produced by his parents, about him scheduled to come out in June. I have seen one review already, and it sounds like the documentary is worth seeing. I hope that he i...

Anton Yelchin won’t be replaced as Chekov

After Anton Yelchin’s death in a bizarre accident, it was announced that he won’t be replaced as Chekov in the next Star Trek movie. I am glad. He was good in the role and I would not envy any actor who would have stepped into the role. Of course, Yelchin had a career outside of Star Trek. He will be missed beyond Star Trek. No one knows (and no one can ever know)what other projects he could have had made or what career path he might have taken. At least his character was more important to the third Star Trek movie than he was to the second one. I like all the new Star Trek movies but some of the crew did not get to shine in Star Trek Into Darkness. Maybe some day someone else will play Chekov in a Star Trek movie or TV episode. Right now the role is vacant and I think that is the right choice.

Thoughts about Thoroughbreds

This is Anton Yelchin’s last film. He has a supporting role as a drug dealer. He was good. It is hard not to think about this being his last film now. (The film was dedicated to him.) Sort like it will be hard to see the next Star Trek movie without noticing his absence. This film is about two girls and their odd friendship and a murder. Lily(Anya Taylor-Joy)hates her step father, who doesn’t seem to have any warmth. Amanda (Olivia Cooke) is an old friend but Amanda claims to have no feelings. Amanda is very blunt and direct. As the film continues, it is revealed that Lily might have her own emotional problems. Maybe friendship is the wrong word for their relationship. It is interesting to watch their relationship progress though. At first I was not aware that the girls had been friends when they were younger but had grown apart. This film’s strength is in the performances. Taylor-Joy and Cooke are both very good. Taylor-Joy came to notice after the Witch and Split. I first notic...
