Movie Thoughts 12-9-2018

Maybe Robin Hood and King Arthur need to fight. Maybe that will get people to go to a King Arthur movie. Just kidding but watch to see if that happens in the next 5 years. I am not sure that why they would fight.

Do people really want to see a Men in Black film without Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones? I guess we will find out. Although Jones kind of sat out a large part of the last movie but Josh Brolin played a younger version of Jones’ character. It has been a few years since the last Men in Black movie. I like the concept of Men in Black but I liked the pairing of Smith and Jones.

I saw a video review of the new Fantastic Beasts movie that was just brutal. That movie has some problems, I will admit. I think it could have been better but I guess I felt more generous towards the film than the guy who made the video.

Who’s Harry Crumb is not John Candy’s best film but I liked it

Who’s Harry Crumb stared John Candy as an inept private detective investigating a kidnapping. Of course Harry thinks he is a great detective. (That is the source of the comedy.) His father and grandfather were great detectives. He is assisted by the kidnapped girl’s sister Nicki (Shawnee Smith). They have a good chemistry. I liked John Candy but this is a trifle. I probably should not have bought it but I did. (At least it was reasonably priced.) There was a brief bit where Harry disguises himself as an Indian American (not Native American). I don’t think it was really mean-spirited but it would not go over well today. I guess this might be considered Candy’s attempt to create an inspector Clouseau type character.

Diablo is good but not connected to the video games

 Diablo is not connected to the video game series. It is not a John Wick spinoff either (even if two of the actors were in John Wick chapter 4). Scott Adkins stars as Cris who kidnaps a teenage girl, Eliza, who he claims is his daughter. He says her mother visited him in prison and asked him to save her from Vicente, the man Eliza believes is her father. Vicente is a criminal. Eliza's mother is dead. Vicente offers a reward for Eliza's return.  One of Vincente's henchmen calls in a psycho (Marko Zaror) to get her but he seems creepy and might have his own motives.  The movie is set in Columbia. This is the third time Adkins and Zaror have fought on screen.  I don't think their characters in John Wick chapter 4 fought. (Maybe they fight a lot off screen, heh.) It is nice to see them on screen together.  This is good. It might be better than I expected. Director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza also directed Fist of the Condor staring Zaror.

Rescue Me was fun

This is an old movie, maybe early 90s. Stephen Dorrf stars as a high school student obsessed with a cheerleader. He teams up with Michael Dudikoff’s Mac when the cheerleader, Ginny, is kidnapped.  I am not claiming this is a lost classic. It is not lost and not a classic. I would say it is underrated but maybe it is not well known enough to be underrated. It was a fun action comedy. I know Dudikoff from the American Ninja movies, so I probably like this movie more than someone who isn’t a fan of that series. I also liked his film the Platoon Leader (which is a budget Platoon).  I thought Dudikoff and Dorrf had a good chemistry. I have seen Dudikoff  in five or six other films over the years, and this might the only one where he plays a father figure. The movie might be a bit corny but not overly corny. I might watch this again next year. There was one cliche that I am surprised the movie did not use.
