Thoughts on Re-watching Star Wars the Last Jedi

Star Wars the Last Jedi was a surprisingly polarizing film. It was popular at the box office but there has been an online backlash against it. There still is but the movie sold pretty well on home video, so maybe the backlash is coming from a small but vocal group of fans.

I like the movie overall. It is a little long. The subplot on the casino planet feels unnecessary or at least too long. I wonder if a version of the movie without that subplot would be significantly better.  You have to review the movie that is, not the movie you want the movie to be. There is probably a better way to say that.

There are some other problems with the film but overall I still enjoyed the movie enough to re-watch it and I am still interested in seeing the next movie. I have not given up on the franchise and I don’t expect to (this could of course change).

The major problem with the the film, according to its critics, is that Luke is not enough of a badass. Did they not see the Force Awakens? What about that movie hinted that Luke would be a major badass? If anything did, I must have missed it.

Then people, mostly men, don’t like the character of Rey. She apparently got too good with the Force too soon. As I recall, Luke got pretty good with the Force in the original trilogy, so I get the idea that some people might be able to become good in using the Force quickly.

Also people don’t like Admiral Holdo not telling Poe her plan. Well considering Leia already demoted him for not seeing the big picture and being a glory hound, I understand the Admiral’s decision. Then he tried a mutiny. Poe might mean well but he is in the wrong.
