Dark Phoenix has problems

Dark Phoenix has problems. I think it is better than Men in Black International.

We barely know this version of Jean, so a story about her losing control or going to the dark side can only have so much impact. I think we needed more of her in the last movie or we needed a full movie with the new cast after Apocalypse before doing the Dark Phoenix story. I thought Sophie Turner was pretty good.

I think this movie needed more Quicksilver. Maybe he is a one trick pony but it is a good trick. I think the movie lost something after he got hurt.

Maybe Charles Xavier is too much at fault in this movie.  I think this movie should have centered more on Jean. Now the movie is as much about his failings as Jean’s struggles. Maybe that was not the best choice.

The death of Mystique might have had more impact if I had not known about it before the movie opened. I know Jennifer Lawrence’s performance as Mystique has detractors (I might be included in that group at times) but maybe revealing her death was a mistake. The movie wants her death to be a big event and a turning point for some major characters. Maybe it should not have been revealed in the trailers.

I liked it this even with its problems. Maybe I had low expectations because of the negative reviews. I thought some of the performances were good and I thought the last act had a good closing action sequence. I thought the use of the characters’ powers came across well. Storm’s powers seemed pretty impressive (for example).

The villains aren’t interesting and nobody seems intrigued by learning there are aliens. I am not an expert on Jessica Chastain’s career but I suspect this performance is a relative low point for her. Maybe she was going for something mysterious but it did not quite work.

I think it might be just as well that Marvel will reboot the X-men someday.
