This is the Year is decent

This is the Year is from a first time director (David Henrie) and the movie has a familiar plot. Josh (played by Lorenzo James Henrie) lies to a girl named Zoey that he likes that he has tickets to a concert. He, Zoey, his best friend Mikey, Mikey’s brother Donny, and his female best friend Molly go off to the concert. There are some adventures along the way.

The film likes most of its characters, except maybe for Zoey’s boyfriend. He is not a jerk exactly but he is kind of self absorbed and pretentious. Zoey is likable throughout the movie and she has some nice moments with Molly. (In a 1980s movie, these two would not be friends.)

Henrie is best known for his role on Wizards of Waverly Place and his role on How I Met Your Mother. This is good for a first movie. The performances are good. Maybe a conflict is resolved a bit too easily but I think the movie is worth seeing.

Is this movie too chaste? It might be but not every teen movie needs to be American Pie. If the makers of the film did not want to go for gross out humor, maybe that is okay. Is this movie too predictable? Possibly.

Also this movie has a low key love triangle. It might only be a love triangle in a technical sense. It was nice how that situation resolved itself.

Kevin Carr of Fat Guys at the Movies liked it.
