1993’s The Three Musketeers is good

Do Charlie Sheen and Keifer Sutherland seem French to you? No, they don’t but this is a good movie. Oliver Platt doesn’t seem French but he was not a star of Young Guns, so perhaps he seems a bit more French than the other two.

The Cardinal Richelau is plotting against the young king. The Musketeers have been disbanded but three Musketeers have not surrendered. They met a young man named D’Artagnan (Chris O’Donnell) who wants to be a musketeer. He manages to offend them all in separate meetings and he has duels scheduled with them all. The Cardinal’s guards interrupt the duel.

Sheen is Aramis, who studied to be a priest before becoming a musketeer, and Sutherland is Athos, a former nobleman. Platt is Porthos, who seems to enjoy life a bit more than his friends. In hindsight Sheen playing a character who studied to become a priest is a bit funny.

Michael Wincott stars as the Cardinal’s henchmen. He was also in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves as Guy of Gisbourne. Tim Curry is the Cardinal and Rebecca De Mornay is Milady De Winter.

I thought this was fun.  The fight scenes are good, I like a good sword fight and I thought these were good. It is not as good as the Micheal York films from the 1970s or the recent films from France with an all-star cast.
