Movie thoughts late November 2021

I think the first Fear Street movie was the best. I liked all three. I think I might re-watch the first film in a few months and see if I have any new thoughts I want to share.  I liked Black Widow. It was a bit odd going into the movie after seeing her die on screen. I wonder if that was part of the reason I liked Shang Chi a bit more than Black Widow. It took too long for her to get a solo movie. There is a report that before Ghostbusters Afterlife that a video shows director Jason Reichtman talking about there being 300 Easter Eggs in the movie. I think that seems like a lot, maybe too many. I am not against Easter Eggs but maybe putting 300 Easter Eggs in a movie seems like a lot of effort that could be used in other ways. I saw Mystery Men. It is good. I am not sure if I would watch it again or not. It is a laugh riot but it has some laughs. It is a less of a spoof than I expected. It stars Ben Stiller and sometime I find him a little too much. The song All Star by Smash Mouth dat

Rocky Vs Drago is pretty good

This is interesting. This is a reworked version of Rocky IV.  About 40 minutes of previously unused footage has been added but other footage was removed. The movie remains under 2 hours. Paulie’s robot has been removed from the film. The robot might have been not received and I think he won’t be missed. This does not leave a lot for Paulie to do in the movie. Paulie does have a nice moment in the film though.  It is good. The relationship with Rocky and Apollo is a highlight. I haven’t seen the original cut of Rocky IV in ages but I think this cut might be better in some ways. I think the last thirty minutes or so of the film are pretty much the same as the original version. I think this is worth seeing even if you have seen the original cut.

Movie thoughts mid November 2021

I’d think I rather watch a third Debt Collectors movie than another Red Notice. I don’t think there will be a third Debt Collectors movie. Film critic/podcaster David Chen tweeted that Deadpool was a blessing for Ryan Reynolds economically but also a limitation or curse creatively. That Reynolds is just playing variations on Deadpool.  Ghostbusters Afterlife comes out soon. I am curious if people will go. Maybe I will give the movie a shot if there are some more positive reviews. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was pretty good. I think it is worth re-watching sometime next year.  I have not complained about too much comic relief in a film for a while. I wonder if I have just accepted that movies might have more comic relief than I’d like. Or maybe movies are starting to cut back on comic relief.

Red Notice should be better (updated)

This movie feels like it should be better. This stars Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds. Maybe Johnson is making so many films that a new film by him does not seem like an event. (He has had seven or eight films come out since 2017.) I still think Dave Bautista might be better in some roles but I have liked most of the films I’ve seen with Johnson. Reynolds seems to be playing a variation of Deadpool with each film. Maybe he is in a rut or he needs a slightly different role. Free Guy was a nice change of pace. Gal Galdot is okay I guess but I don’t think she has been really good outside of her role as Wonder Woman. Or else she needs Chris Pine as a co-star.  This is not terrible. I have seen worse. Gadot is working against Johnson and Reynolds. Johnson wants to clear his name after being framed for the theft of one of Cleopatra’s golden eggs. He and Reynolds team up. I just don’t think there is anything special about this film.
