I liked Power Ballad

 This stars Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd. Jonas plays Danny a former boy band member who meets Rick at a wedding. They played together at the wedding and they hung out after the wedding. During this time they worked on a song. Back in LA, Danny is playing that song maybe looking for inspiration when his girlfriend says he should record and release it. He does and it revives his career.

Paul Rudd stars as Rick. He was in a band in America, how big/famous his band was is not clear but they were big enough to tour Ireland. Rick married an Irish woman and they had a daughter. Rick works as a wedding singer and while he is not actively unhappy, he feels this wedding singer job is a come down.

Rick hears his song and he wants some money as a co-writer.  He tries to sue but the lawyer says he does not have a case if he cannot produce some evidence that he worked on the song before he met Danny. Rick becomes bitter. 

Maybe this could have been funnier but I think it was worth seeing. Danny is not mean or cruel but he might be weak. He doesn't do the right thing after being talked out of by his manager. 

Rudd and Jonas are good. I wonder if Jonas wants to do more acting.

One review said there should be a joke about Ricks last name, Power. Has that guy not seen any of the Meet the Parents movies?

Thoughts about the Short History of the Long Road

I liked this film. Sabrina Carpenter stars as Nola, a teenage girl living in a van and traveling America after her father’s death. They were on the road together when he suddenly died.  I think they have been on the road since her early childhood. Nola has to figure out what she does next. I won’t go into the plot details but I will say that the movie is mostly optimistic. Nola meets mostly nice people during her time on the road including Danny Trejo as an auto repair shop owner. Nola does meet her mother (okay, I spoiled the part of the plot). While the film is sometimes sad, I don’t think the move was grim or depressing. Nola’s dad might have romanticized their life on the road. Nola did not, she sees that it has some drawbacks, and I don’t the film does either. The life looks a bit lonely. I lost interest in the Girl in the Spider’s Web

I am not saying this is a terrible movie. I just lost interest and I think I had 40 or maybe 50 minutes left to watch. I might try it to watch it again in a month or so. Or I might not. Claire Foy plays Lisabeth Salandar, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, in this movie. She is the third actress to take the role and she is good in it. The problems with the film don’t include her. This movie bombed but it doesn’t seem like it hurt Foy’s career. I am not sure why I lost interest. I thought there was a car chase that went on too long. I’ve seen a lot of car chases over the years but it feels like I have not seen a really good one in a while. This feels like it wants to be a female James Bond or female Jason Bourne movie. It is fairly humorless. Except for Foy’s performance, there is not much to recommend this film. I am not recommending this movie. The Killer’s Game

 Dave Baustia stars as a hitman who gets told he is going to die from an incurable disease. This is at the same time as he is starting a romance with a ballet dancer played by Sophia Boutella. He puts a hit on himself. He gets a call from the doctor and is told he is not dying. He cannot call off the hit. I liked it. It was nice to see Marko Zaror and Daniel Bernhardt in supporting roles. Bernhardt is underappreciated. Terry Crews is on hand as another assassin and I  thought he was good. The action scenes are good.  Ben Kingsley has a supporting role. It was nice to see him. In one scene, his wife is offscreen and asks if their visitor knows what time it is. “Yes dear, he owns a watch” was Kingsley’s reply and that made me smile. I know Kingsley was put in the movie to add a touch of class and well, it worked. There is not too much humor. (Yeah, I know. I still complain about too much humor or comic relief from time to time.)
