Freaky was decent and other movie thoughts

Freaky was decent. Maybe I expected too much but I thought it would be better. I think Happy Death Day was a little better than Freaky but maybe Freaky is as good as Happy Death Day 2U. Maybe I will have more thoughts on Freaky later in the year if I re-watch it.  March 18 is the day the Snyder cut of Justice League streams on HBOMax. I probably won't watch it but I will check the reviews.  Melissa McCarthy's next movie, Thunder Force, is another comedy directed by her husband Ben Falcon. Octavia Spencer is co-starring and she almost always makes a movie worth seeing (if she has made a bad movie I don't remember it). If this movie, Thunder Force turns out bad, that kind of proves that Falcone should not direct.  It would be nice if the Spider, the old pulp hero, got a movie. I think it could work and the character could be updated to the modern day. (He has been in comics.)

Return of the Musketeers was good and other movie thoughts

Return of the Musketeers was decent. This is a sequel to the Four Musketeers set 20 years later and it has Michael York, Oliver Reed, and Kim Cattrall. I am not saying it is the equal of the Three Musketeers or the Four Musketeers, but Return is worth seeing if you liked the originals. If you haven't seen the classics from the 1970s, they are worth seeing.  I am tired of announcements of films being pushed back until later dates. I am guess this is going to be a recurring event for a while but it is not fun. I think the new James Bond movie has been pushed back three times now. The new news on the Snyder cut is it will be a four hour movie, not four one-hour episodes. I guess I am a little interested to see what the response will be but I will probably pass on the film.

Soul was decent and other movie thoughts

The latest  Disney/Pixar film Soul was decent. It is nice to have Jamie Foxx provide the voice for the lead character. However maybe it is just because I just saw Onward recently, I liked Soul but not nearly as much as I liked Onward on re-watch. Maybe on re-watch I will like Soul a bit better and I think I might re-watch it. I finally saw Collateral. Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise are really good. Cruise plays a hitman who hires a taxi driver (Fox) to drive him to his various jobs. There are some really good scenes, especially one where Fox has to pretend to be Cruise. Foxx was really good, maybe I forgot how good an actor he can be after the Amazing Spider-man II. I liked the Invisible Man but not as much as most critics. It is not bad exactly but I am not sure that I'd ever want to see it again. A couple of times it seemed like the Invisible Man has above average strength but that could just be an impression I got. I thought Elizabeth Moss was good in the lead role as a woman who fea...

First movie this year, was a re-watch of Onward

I re-watched Onward today. I guess I could have started a new year with a new movie but I was curious how well this one holds on re-watch. (The last movie watched of 2020 was 2020's Call of the Wild. It was good. I am not sure if I will write a full review.) Onward is better than I remembered. The movie gets better after the first twenty minutes or so. I like that, it is better than a movie having a strong first two acts but falling apart in the third act. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland provide voices for two elf brothers on a quest to get a magical gem to get to see their late father for one day. There are complications, of course. This is worth seeing if you have not seen it. It is probably on par with Monsters Inc or Monsters University.

Wonder Woman 1984 is possibly average

I think this movie might be average. There are some nice elements but movie is a bit long. This movie could have been maybe 10 to 15 minutes shorter. Maybe using two villains might have not worked. It is nice to see Chris Pine again as Steve Trevor. He and Gal Gadot have a nice chemistry. It was a nice to see their roles reversed to a degree, with him as a man out of time and Diana explaining the world to him. Gal Gadot remains very good as Diana/Wonder Woman.  I also thought Kristen Wiig was surprisingly good as Barbara Minerva. She should do some more noncomedic roles. I thought Pedro Pascal was fine as Maxwell Lord and he did not seem that similar to Donald Trump to me. I know that was something some critics mentioned.   This one was good at times but a little too long and sometimes it seemed like maybe the movie would have played better with only one villain.  Maybe limiting the film to one villain would have improved a  of storyline. An online critic ...

Lord of the Rings The of the Ring is still really good

I haven't seen this any of the Lord of the Rings films in years. I have the new 4k box set. I re-watched the Fellowship of the Ring last weekend. It is really good. Maybe the disappointment of the Hobbit trilogy made me forget (a little) how good the Lord of the Rings trilogy is. (This concludes the bashing of the Hobbit trilogy in this review.) I did not watch the extended edition. I guess I could have but I liked the original version a lot. I don't feel like I am missing much with that version. Maybe when I re-watch the Two Towers, I will watch the extended version.  I might not have a 4k TV, so I might be missing some of the impact of the 4k discs. However it is nice to have the discs and it was nice to have both the theatrical and extended versions of the trilogy included. Th film still looked good.  The cast does a good job and I like the movie's epic feel. I did enjoy the time spent in the Shire before the quest begins but I feel the movie does not take too long to ge...

Movie thoughts 12-4-2020

The Next Karate Kid was decent. I might watch it again. I think I have never seen it before I watched it on Netflix last month.  I should have my top ten list of movies 2020 at the end of the year. I am waiting to see a few more movies before I make my choices. It will be odd not to have a Marvel movie on the list. This year’s list might also be fairly light on sequels. I think I might have some odd thing where I  don’t get Charlize Theron. A lot of critics loves the Old Guard her action movie but I did not finish it and I don’t think I will give it another chance. I also didn’t finish Mad Max Fury Road. I haven’t seen her romantic comedy with Seth Rogan but that is as much about me being burned out on Seth Rogan.
